President Bola Tinubu conferred the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) on veteran journalist, publisher, and very active member of the International Press Institute Nigeria, Dapo Olorunyomi.
He was awarded this honour during a joint session of the National Assembly to commemorate Democracy Day. The award recognizes his lifelong defense of civil rule, press freedom, and his courageous use of journalism to challenge the Sani Abacha military dictatorship.
Background & Significance:
• Pro-Democracy Activism: Olorunyomi, along with other media icons, co-founded The News magazine, which served as a critical tool in demanding Nigeria’s return to democracy.
• Media Leadership: He currently serves as the Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of PREMIUM TIMES and CEO of the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID).
